Eye Pigmentation in Portugal

Brown eyes
This is the class of eye color that predominates the majority of the population.
Immediately it is recognized that the distribution of the local differences for this class of eye color, divides the country and its people into two shades, Light and Dark.

Dark Eyes, or dark brown eyes, is the subclass that accounts for 39.68% of males 46.11% of females.
The mean percentage for this class is therefore 42% of the population.

Disseminated throughout out the country, it characterizes almost half of the populace, but in particular the south, such as Alentejo and Algarve, with a significant deficiency in the Littoral North, Beira Littoral and Entre-Douro-e-Minho.

Observing the population by provincial distribution, it is verified that the only regions with a signification lack for Dark eyes is in the North of the country.
The Islands, in particular, the district of Funchal is also best characterized by this subclass, with in Angra do Heroísmo exhibiting another deficit.

Medium eyes, or light brown eyes, corresponds to 37.06% of males and 33.23% of females, and it is the second subclass that best defines the population. The mean percentage for this subclass is therefore 35% of the population.

Beira Litoral and Entre-Douro-e-Minho abounds this turn up, with the rest of the country being defected.
By district, the distribution of Medium eyes is in significant excess in Coimbra, Aveiro, Porto and Braga.
The district of Viana do Castelo and Islands are also amisseed, with the exception of Ponta Delgada.

The excess of Medium eyes is also a typical shade existent through out the country, but it is in great abundance restricted to the Northern littoral forefront, between Mondego and Neiva.

Light eyes
This is the second class of eye color, in minority, correspondent to only one twentieth of the population.

Light eyes, in the form of Light Blue, Hazel, Green, Gray and Amber shades altogether, is a class symptomatic to 17.23% of males and 14.81% of females.
The mean percentage for this class is therefore 16% of the population.

Although broadcasted from North to South, it is Entre-Douro-e-Minho and Beira Baixa that fulminate this class, with the province of Trás-os-Montes displaying a relatively elevated concentration among the males. Beira Alta and its respective meridional provinces are however pointedly sparse.

The megalometric character in the North of the country, is yet best revealed by districts.
With effect, light eyes predominate in Guarda, Porto, Vila Real and Viana do Castelo.
The extreme South of the country and Islands, exhibit an offset for this class of eye color.

Blue eyes
Considering the country by provincial distribution, Dark-Blue eyes is restricted to a small number accounting only for 6% to 9% of the population, without asymmetry between genders.

It's higher significance is noted in the North of the country, in Entre-Douro-e-Minho, Beira Alta and Trás-os-Montes. The Portuguese Extremadura also records this class of eye color in a relatively high run, in the districts of Lisbon, Santarém and Leiria.

The lack of Blue eyes features the South of the country, southwards of Tejo.
The adjacent islands are also represented by a small percentage, with the exception of Angra and Horta.
In Ponta Delgada and Funchal, there is also a sensible lack for this class of eye color.[1]


In sum, clear Blue eyes are observed through out the country, however it best characterizes the Northern populations. In particular, the littoral regions near the valleys and the rivers, which by, the mountainous massif of Serra da Estrela divides the zone from the Spanish frontier towards the sea.
Light eyes altogether expands this class of Eye color through out the country, but more concentrated in the Central and Northern regions, with Brown eyes predominating the overall population, but in particular the South and Islands.

    1. percantage of light eyes is higher than 16% in north 30% to 40% .Iam from flores island azores we had alot people with blue eyes and hazel eyes.Data is rubbish and not accurate

  3. I'm from the South of Portugal. Do you know how many people have blue/ green / Hazel eyes....? Its all about the sea, Fisherman and woman. People close to the the coast.

    Our eyes reflect the sea and the sky!
